How do we handle change? Things don't always remain the same. And that can produce confusion, pain and debilitation. But we must face the change, sometimes quickly.

An example is Vivian, who is a lovely woman with a good mind and heart. After college, she worked in the brokerage industry on Wall Street. Three years later, she got married and had two boys. She was a full time mother, and her husband made a good living. She enjoyed this life for eighteen years.

But then her husband divorced her and married a woman he worked with. Vivian had to face this shocking change to her -natural- order. Now on her own, with a sixteen year old and a twelve year old, she needed to go to work. But how would she manage raising the boys? A new reality was unavoidable.

The first summer Vivian was divorced, she took a full time job. But she saw how chaotic and disrespectful her two sons became because of her absence from the house during her working hours. She also wasn't fond of the so-called friends her sons had. This forced her to do something neither of her sons could believe. She quit a very good paying job to stay home and police the two of them the rest of the summer. But she wanted to make sure they took the right fork in the road of life.

That fall, she got a job with the Board of Education so her hours would correspond with the time the boys were in school. This allowed her to be a caring and nurturing mother, along with her new role as disciplinarian. Today her sons are strong, independent and successful men, who credit their success to their mother.

Normal mineral oil is derived from nature by fractional distillation of crude oil. It continues to be used as a lubricant for automobile engines and became very popular amongst car and bike users. But over a period of time, scientists began to wonder if a better, more efficient engine oil could be created. With that in mind, researchers tried different chemical combination and came up with an engine oil which seemed to minimize some of the disadvantages of mineral oil. They came up with an engine oil formula which could work better in extreme temperatures, improve the fuel economy of the vehicle, be more resistant to oxidation and thermal breakdowns, decrease losses through evaporation and generally reduce car problems. This oil is known as synthetic oil. And now, as synthetic oil comes to the fore in the engine oil market, people are interested in knowing more and more about this revolutionary kind of oil.

How Often Should You Change Synthetic Oil?

Its essential to know how often you should change the engine oil. The performance of the engine relies very heavily on the quality of the engine oil which is used. Hence, it's a good practice to change oil regularly so that your car doesn't face any car engine problems. Its generally assumed that the synthetic oil change interval is more than the mineral oil change interval, but one still should not discount the importance of a regular oil change.

This will ensure good fuel economy and good engine performance in general.

These days, most cars come with a device, which tells the user that the oil needs to be changed. This device monitors the quality of the oil, the usage and the time for which the car has been driven. When the device senses that the oil needs to be changed, it alerts the user regarding the same.

Impact on the Environment

The thing with changing oil regularly is that it can have quite a bad effect on the environment. Regular oil needs to be changed a lot more often than synthetic oil. That results in more unclean oil and therefore, more oil getting trashed or dumped into the ocean. With synthetic oil, the changing interval is a lot bigger, giving the environment a little breathing space. With current levels of toxicity on the planet, a 'little' breathing space might still be too less to suffice, but it's still better than none at all.

Other Factors Affecting Oil Change

While the oil change interval given above was the normal interval, your synthetic oil change interval may reduce on account of the following reasons. The first, like I mentioned before, is the way you drive. If you drive too fast or you push the limits of the engine or you use the car too roughly, then the engine oil will need to be changed a lot more often in order to protect your engine. The other factor is the engine itself. Some engines claim to require a less frequent oil change while others may require a more frequent oil change. The next factor affecting the oil interval is the age of the car engine. It is understandable that older cars may require a more frequent change in oil. And lastly, the quality of the engine oil you used the previous time is also very crucial. If you use a cheaper, low quality engine oil, you might have to change it more frequently.

Many people can't resist talking about the awesomeness of their car and how they never had to change their engine oil over 100,000 miles of driving. While this may be true, it is always better to maintain a normal synthetic oil change interval. This movie actually was released in very limited viewing areas some time ago but never at a location near me. So I waited and watched for it actually hoping to pick up the DVD when it was released. So to my surprise months later, I luck up on an internet link to free tickets for opening weekend, now a much wider release which included my location. I tell you the Law of Attraction is always in action.

I take my fourteen year old and off we go. Let's just say I was already feeling good because I didn't have to whip out my wallet. I don't have the words to relay just how inspired this movie made me feel. I've followed Nick Nolte's career here and there, I find this movie to be some of his best work ever. I liked the fact that he was not all perfect looking and cuddly, his scratchy voice is his trademark. Yeah, it does get a little cheesy in some spots but these are very minor if you're able to look at the big picture.

After the movie, my fourteen year old and I talked and recited quotes from the movie all the way home. If this doesn't sound amazing to you, that's because you don't know my son. This young man doesn't waste his words and if I can pull one to two sentences a day out of him I'm lucky. We both left feeling good, motivated and inspired. I'd gladly pay this time to see the movie again and most certainly will add this one to my DVD collection right next to The Secret and What the Bleep Do We Know. I take these quotes and add them to my son's school agenda, a type of notebook his school uses to track homework assignments and parental communication. So instead of just signing my name every night, I write a quote or a positive kudo for my son to read to himself in school the next day.

Change - So What!

Reactions to this statement vary;

"Yes, but I'm not the one causing all the problems"

"I hear what you're saying but why do I have to change if I'm not at fault?"

"Yes, but he/she won't even notice my effort, he/she never does!"

"If I try to do something different it gets thrown back in my face..."

One of my answers to some of these excuses?

"So what?"

As you may very well expect, this is greeted with pure disbelief, chins dropping to the floor and bewildered expressions...and usually goes together with a few seconds of absolute silence - which in itself is a welcome break from the tornado of chaos and cacophony that often accompanies couples into my office.

Total exasperation quickly follows with mouths opening and closing furiously as they try to come up with a verbal answer to my ridiculous question...all that most suffice to get is..."...what do you MEAN "so what!?"

And to their utmost frustration, I simply repeat my answer...: "so what?"

So what if he/she doesn't notice it/throws it back in your face/ is the actual one at fault...?

By this time, exasperation and confusion is quickly giving way to irritation and something bordering hostility...but I don't budge, I wait it out. I want them to really think about it.

You see, me asking SO WHAT does not imply that what they say is not relevant. I want them to get to a deeper level of realizing something about themselves...let me explain:

When asking "so what?" - and actually making an effort to get a true answer - you pry a little deeper, you open up the door to the actual emotion underlying the issue that is being discussed. Let's take the "he won't notice my effort" excuse given earlier, as an example.

"So what if he doesn't notice your effort?

Answer: I feel like I'm doing it for nothing.

"So what?

I don't want to feel that, I want to feel that my effort is noticed, if I feel that it's not noticed, I feel that he just doesn't care, it's not important to him..."

"So what?"

But I want to be important to my husband! I want him to love me enough to want to work at our differences! (Now sobbing)

Aha! - We have just discovered an emotion underlying some of their conflict issues.

She feels unimportant and un-loved and that emotion is confirmed when he doesn't take notice of the efforts she makes. Do you see - the action is not necessarily the cause of the argument it's the confirmation of the emotion...

At this stage, the husband/the other partner turns around totally dumbfounded - but you ARE important to me and I do want to make this work, that's why we are here, I'll do anything so that we can just sort this mess out!

When dealing with the underlying emotion, things start becoming very clear. Those same emotions can often be dragged through to a NUMBER of other fights that the couple has; on an altogether too regular basis.

It's the way that certain behaviours or actions make us FEEL and the message that those feelings portray that is the actual problem. If we can identify the emotion and the message, we can adjust the behaviour or actions to send a different message. And often times, couples can sort it out themselves from then on forwards, because they know - it's not about me not noticing the effort, it's about me not making her feel loved and cherished; her not knowing how much she means to me.

So when you get mad or frustrated in the future, about something your partner does or doesn't do, do you both a favour and ask yourself a series of "so what" questions. Identify your underlying emotion and go and address THAT with your partner.
