Christmas! Probably the one occasion in the year when, cake decorator or non cake decorator, you will have a go at creating your own cake! It could be a novelty cake or Christmas themed cupcakes, a traditional fruit cake with a frosted snow scene or something a little more adventurous!

You may choose to stay traditional or go contemporary with a more modern design.

Check out websites or browse the shops for readymade decorations, or simply buy a few cutters to do it yourself! From boards to boxes, santas to snowmen, snowflakes to stars and robins to reindeer, you are spoilt for choice!

If time is limited just buy an iced cake, add some claydough Christmas characters and finish with a decorative Christmas ribbon around the side, and hey presto! Job done!

However, if you have the time and wish to create your own design, look online or in books and magazines for inspiration, and get those creative juices going! To help you on your way, look at tins, cutters and moulds to plan your design, followed by plenty of glitter, sprinkles and sparkle!

So why not try some or all of these yourself, or with the children:-

Collect together some blocks of ready coloured sugarpaste and have a go at some simple models of santa, snowmen, snowballs, a tree or a penguin.

Buy a claydough reindeer with sleigh, santa with parcels and a log cabin, and create a story of santa delivering his parcels!

Make a snowy scene using clear glitter flakes, add a few snowflakes with an easy to use snowflake plunger cutter, followed by a sprinkling of glitter dust!

Simply ice a cake (or buy one!), spray it with a lustre colour and tie it up with a decorative Christmas ribbon as a parcel - what could be simpler!

For a small individual cake, why not bake a cake in a baked bean or sponge pudding tin and transform it into a candle. Cut out holly leaves, make a few berries and decorate the candle!

If you fancy having a go at a more intricate design:-

Look at stencils or moulds to create a design with flair!

Be dramatic! Cover your cake with dark blue for a sky, cut out stars with a star plunger cutter and colour them silver. Place on cake and on wires, and just add nativity figures.

Make a Christmas tree using a tree tin, cover in green sugarpaste, then have fun decorating it! Make tree ornaments, streamers and baubles with plenty of glitter! Or just add sweets and chocolates!!

Make your own bauble! Create the design with crimpers and straight frill cutters in colours of your choice.

Buy cupcake cases and use cutters, moulds or stencils to make an array of Christmas designs. These will be popular with the children!

Whatever you choose to make, have a very happy Christmas!
